Complaints to the Ombudsman
I assist parents with Complaints to the Ombudsman and my success rate is high. If your appeal was unsuccessful and you think some form of maladministration occurred or that you were not given a fair hearing you can refer your complaint to the Local Government Ombudsman. You cannot, however complain on the grounds that you disagree with the decision of the Appeal Panel. If you feel your hearing did not go correctly write down immediately afterwards what happened during the appeal. Do this straight away as one’s memory can play tricks over time. It is a good idea to request to see the notes made by the Clerk of the proceedings of your appeal. The notes will include how the panel reached their decision. Some admission authorities are happy to send you a copy of the notes for the price of around £10.00. Others are reluctant to divulge this information until later in the proceedings. Assistance begins with a consultation with parents by telephone or face-to-face in which we discuss the case in detail and establish the grounds for the complaint. I then write the Complaint to the Ombudsman highlighting the important points that will maximise the chance of success. A successful complaint will not normally result in your child being offered a place at the school. The Ombudsman can order you to be given a new appeal, with a new panel and a new clerk.
