University entry

UK universities are among the best in the world, which is why so many overseas students want to study here.  Deciding which universities to apply for is a very daunting task for students both for students in the UK and for those coming from abroad. There are a great many different types of universities offering a bewildering number of courses.

Choosing the right course at the right university to get the right qualifications for your chosen career is a time consuming and daunting task, especially as the consequences of getting it wrong are so serious.

School Guidance gives expert and professional advice which helps students to choose the university and the course which will give them the best passport for life.

FOUNDATION COURSES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Students coming from abroad whose home qualifications do not match those required by UK universities may need to take an International Foundation Course. Students for whom English is not their mother tongue receive English language tuition. School Guidance gives advice on which Foundation Course is best suited to the student and helps with the application process.

UNIVERSITY AND FOUNDATION COURSE SEARCH

Preliminary Stage

A list of the examination results already obtained and a list of the examinations to be taken is sent, usually by email to School Guidance.

If the student’s first language is not English his or her IELTS score is also sent usually by email to School Guidance.

The cost for the university search is agreed.

Education Consultation

The University Search starts with a consultation. The consultation normally takes an hour and may be by telephone or face-to-face depending on what is required. Your aspirations are discussed and information is given about the universities and courses which might best fulfil your requirements. The type of university you want to apply for is decided and also the course.  The criteria for the search are decided and also any specific information that is required to be included in the report, for example about accommodation or open days.

University Search and Education Report

After the consultation the universities and courses will be researched. When the University Search has been completed, the Education Report containing in depth information about the universities and courses that meet the criteria is sent, usually by email.

Advice is given on filling in the UCAS form and writing the Personal Statement.

School Guidance will work with you along every step of the way to help you to gain a place at a UK university.

Some frequently asked questions put by students coming from abroad include:

"I left school after my A levels with the intention of taking a gap year. Unfortunately I had to retake an A Level and was finding it very difficult to write my Student Profile for the UCAS form. The world trip I had planned with my friend fell through and I had no idea what to do with the rest of my gap year.

Penny helped me to write my Student Profile and gave me useful advice about revising for my A Level exam. She then talked me through the options open to me for the rest of my gap year. Through her guidance I got a place on a wonderful course in Ecuador, which will help me with my studies at university.

I found Penny's advice a great help in pointing me in the right direction and I am now looking forward to studying at university."

ARTS FOUNDATION COURSE

"I decided in August that I wanted to start an Art Foundation Course the following month. I was worried that it was too late to apply but a friend suggested I should contact Penny Bysshe. She arranged interviews for me at three colleges and accompanied me on my visits. I was accepted at Winchester College of Art and started the course at the beginning of September. I knew nothing about the application process but Penny helped me complete all the paperwork and even sorted out my accommodation. Without Penny's prompt action I would not have found a place and would have wasted a year. I am really enjoying my course, it is just right for me, and I am very grateful to Penny for the help she gave me."
